Coming up for Air

In the last 6 weekends: I was in Denver, Phil was in Yuma, we both went to Phoenix, Annakate came to visit, and Celia came to visit. Oh, and I turned 30.  I have also been working full time thanks to 2 extra projects I picked up, on top of my normal teaching and research hours.  So weekdays and weekends have been full to the brim! Its been a whirlwind!!   I know I owe people some emails and thank you notes; Im pretty sure there are some bills that need to be paid; and I should probably catch up on laundry eventually…..But, hey, its been a good few weeks.  Phil and I both have a few more trips planned in the next 14 days.  But things should finally slow down by mid-March.

When Annakate came to visit, we checked out the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore, which is one of the oldest parts of Baltimore.  It had cute little homes and book stores.  Then that night, Annakate and I got gussied up and went to the fanciest restaurant in Baltimore, Charleston.   Except, instead of getting $300 tasting menus,   we sat at the bar and ordered dessert 🙂  Then on Sunday we headed down to DC for a quick walking tour, and hopped into the Natural History Museum!  It was a perfect visit!

When Celia and Dave came to visit, Phil and I did a first – we hired a babysitter!!  We have had babysitters in bloomington (and randomly in DC when we did the army 10 miler), but we have somehow never hired a babysitter to come to our house in Baltimore before! Miss Wendie, from Wil’s daycare center, came over to watch him for the afternoon while the 4 of us went out to watch the IU vs Purdue game down at Canton Square.  We finished the afternoon off at Romans, our favorite dive-bar down on Decker.  Then came back and ate cake for my birthday.  Nothing beats a  birthday with your best friend!!

Phoenix 2013

Phil takes work trips to Yuma, AZ often and always flies through Phoenix to get there.  With his flight paid for, we always said it would be so great if I could come along and see my sister at the same time!!  So the timing finally worked out that Wil and I could come along!  Phil went to Yuma at the end of January – and I met him in Arizona with Wil when his project was over where we spent 4 days with the Harrisons.  That also meant – I got to take the longest flight to-date with Wil, ALONE.  but Im happy to report that a tablet full of sesame streets kept him happy for most of the trip!

The rest of the visit was glorious!!  Wendy and Nate’s house is gorgeous, huge, and kid-friendly – Making this one of the best trips we’ve taken in a long time.  I think Wil thought that he was at a theme park for the whole 4 days.  He loved playing with all the new toys, his cousin Luke, and even stopped and waved at baby Elise a few times, haha.  On Saturday, we went to the zoo, then out to eat for Nate’s birthday, then came home to watch the IU game.  On Sunday, we went to the train park and came back to watch Baltimore win the Super Bowl!!  On Monday we were able to go see Wendy’s campus before heading back to the east coast.

Thanks for hosting us guys!!  We had such a great time!!

Emily is getting maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarried.  Yay!!!  I headed over to Denver to go wedding dress shopping with my sister-in-law, Emily!!  (Also known as Auntie Em!)  Most of the bridesmaids, mother-of-the-groom, and mother-of-the-bride all met up for a girls weekend.  It was so much fun.  Of course I was there to support the bride, but it was also a fun little vacation for me.  It was nice to get away for a weekend and not be ‘Mom’ for awhile.  Em had her work cut-out for her, since she looked amaaaazing in everything.  But after 2 fun days of shopping, she found ‘the one’.  Successful trip!! We also made time to hang out in Boulder for awhile and see some old friends (Hi, Pete).  Denver was beautiful and unseasonable warm.  We played some wicked pool.  Ate tons of delicious food.  And had a few celebratory drinks.  (NA, of course, for the one with ‘the condition’).  Party in August!!!

I finally was able to compile pictures from our christmas in bloomington.  Wil had a rough few days with some molars coming in and an undiagnosed illness.  He was quite grumpy and wasnt very cooperative with the camera, but he was starting to get back to his old self by the end of the trip. We even had an extra few days of vacation thanks to some snow that cancelled our flight home!  Wil got to go sledding for the first time (in some questionable ‘snow gear’).  I took nearly zero pictures but was able to get some from Wendy, Char, and my Mom.  Thanks guys for catching these memories!

We had a good plan to go visit Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, DE. We didn’t stick to the plan but it was a good plan none the less. Initially we were going to goto the Dogfish Head pub for lunch and then proceed to the brewery for a 4:30 tour/tasting. In reality Phil accidentally googled directions for the Brewery first (not the pub) which is over 30mins away from the brewery. We got to the brewery at 2:15 for a 4:30 tour. Fortunately there was space in the next tour so we decided to do the tour first and then goto dinner at the pub (or so we thought).

The tasting room was cool, they had this crazy treehouse out front with the freaking enormous holding tanks in the back ground. Since it was the first week of January they still had beer bottle christmas trees everywhere. Additionally I did not mind hanging out in the tasting room waiting for the tour to start.

Everyone was required to wear eye protection, Wil was not a huge fan. Our tour guide looked slightly like bigfoot but he knew everything about the brewery and took his beer very seriously.

Even though they are a small craft brewery the sheer size of the operation was pretty amazing (reference the picture of the treehouse and holding tanks above). Ever since the show about the brewery started airing on the Discovery Channel the demand for Dogfish head has steadily increased. Specifically friends in Indiana have felt the increased demand because Dogfish Head had to drop distributors in Indiana last year. However, while we were there they were in the process of installing 650 BBL brewing tanks to complement their existing 400 BBL tanks. They indicated these should be up and brewing by mid 2013 to start supplying distributors in Indiana again by the end of 2013.

When you say Dogfish Head just about everyone thinks 60/90/120min IPA. These beers get these names based on how long they are ‘dry hopped’. Basically, how long are dry hops continually added to the beer while brewing. Back when the brewery was just stating up the method to continually dry hop these beers was to put a bunch of hops on one of those old electronically vibrating football games at a very slight slant duct  taped to the top of the brewing kettle. As you can imagine the FDA was not keen on this method. Going forward ‘OOOOH Me So Hoppy’ was invented and is used to do the continual dry hopping of the Dogfish Head flagship IPAs.

Dogfish Head keeps one case of ever single batch of beer they brew. Personally, I would like to live in that cage. The owner of Dogfish Head (Sam Calagione) says once his 3 kids are of age he is going to treat them to a 120min IPA from the first batch of 120min IPA ever brewed.

2013-01-05_16-19-19_368

Dogfish ages some of their specialty beers in wooden tanks. They have three Oak tanks that are currently in use. A father/son team from Maine builds all Dogfish Head’s tanks. Each plank in these tanks are cut from a single Oak tree, the height of the tree dictates the max height of the tank. The planks are not grooved to fit together, they are cut the appropriate width and placed flush. Saturating and heating the planks cause them to expand enough within the iron rings so the full tank is water tight.

Each of the Oak tanks cost ~$150k and provide a distinct flavor when the beer is aged inside. Dogfish Head is in the process of installing a new wooden aging tank made out of Palo Santo wood native to Peru and Venezuela which is costing them around $250k. Apparently it is one of the most dense woods on earth and has been used to as makeshift armor to stop small caliber bullets. I am extremely interested to taste any of the beers that come out of this tank.

There was lots more to see at the brewery, see the slide show below.

The tour ended in the tasting room where the guide said ‘if it was any other day I would recommend everyone head over to the Dogfish Head pub in Rehobeth Beach to taste the selections on tap’ . Unfortunately Amy, Wil, and I visited on the one Saturday of the year that they close early for their company ‘New Years’ party. We were disappointed but it just means that we will have to make the drive to Delaware again to drink delicious delicious Dogfish Head on tap.

We bought a few beers from the brewery store that I had never seen/tasted before. We bought “Miles Davis Bitches Brew” which is a tribute to the album of the same name released 40yrs ago. It is billed as an imperial stout but was lighter and sweeter than I expected. There is honey added to the brewing process at some point and you can tell. To me it tastes like a sweeter Guinness.

2013-01-11_18-30-18_648

We also bought a 4 pack of the “Immort Ale”, another one I had never seen/tasted before. I don’t really know what style of  beer this is supposed to be beyond some sort of strong ale. I can taste the maple syrup and vanilla the bottle says it is brewed with but in all honesty I was not a huge fan, and it is few and far between that I find a Dogfish I can’t find something to like. As evidence,I still have two out of the four left, that never happens.

2013-01-11_21-01-18_565

Even though things did not exactly as planned it was a great trip. We had been saying wanted to do the tour forever but had never gotten our act together to actually do it. Amy made reservations for the tour and gave the tickets to me for christmas to motivate us to actually make the drive to Delaware. As a reward for those of you that actually read this far I leave you with a picture of Wil and Barney.

***Yikes  – I had this all set to post the day before we left for Indiana, but never hit publish! Better late than never!  Working on a Christmas in Bloomington post!***

We took Wil to see Santa again this year!  It started off well, with minimal fussing getting into his fancy clothes.  He was looking pretty dapper:

Until we actually got up to the big guy.  Then we werent too happy.

wil_christmas_2012

Hahaha.  I love it.  Santa was very nice about the whole thing.  Santa also came to daycare today, and apparently Wilek’s whole room (1.25 to 2 year olds)  all cried.  Babies and Preschoolers are fine.  Wil’s age — not so much.  Maybe next year!

We also got a small tree at home.  Wil seems to like the lights and ornaments when hes held up close, but since its on the table hes not that interested most of the time.

Hes changed so much in a year!

Halloween 2012

Halloween was kind of a bust this year.  I had a late meeting and wasnt able to pick up Wil til nearly 6. We missed the first round of trick-or-treaters.  Wil was not a huge fan of the Yoda costume – mainly the head-piece.  And it was a pretty chilly night to sit on the porch.  But we got dressed up and did the song and dance for a few pictures.  We still have a few trick-or-treaters come by (but had lots of left over candy – yum!).

We had done pumpkins the weekend before.  I tried to get Wil involved and thought he would like feeling the seeds inside the pumpkin, but I was wrong.  I guess hes not really into slimy things yet.  But once they were cleaned out, he enjoyed taking the tops on and off.  I saw a cute idea to trace his hands and carve them on the pumpkin.  (It of course didnt turn out quite like the tutorial! ha.  Im not very crafty).  I made the other much simpler.

I think next year he’ll be ready to walk around the neighborhood and it’ll be much more exciting!

So this should sound eerily familiar. Approximately 14 months ago ‘hurricane’ Irene came barreling through Baltimore. By ‘barreling’ I mean it rain/drizzled for a  sustained period of time. We affectionately refer to this as ‘Wil’s first hurricane’.

For hurricane Sandy it started raining at about 0200 Oct 29 and has not really stopped since. Looking at the radar is seems like the it might get a little worse but honestly I am not really to sure how bad it is actually going to get in the city of Baltimore. Please see the picture below to see how worried we are.

Meh

Additionally, please compare this picture to the picture from 2011. Neighbor Joe’s car is parked in basically the same place. The most crucial part of all of this is that Verizon 4G is still holding strong. Anyway, everyone stop worrying about us we are doing fine.

October 2012

We have been in autumn mode over here.  Everything has been fall, pumpkins, hay rides, and petting zoos! We went to a pumpkin patch a few weeks ago where they had burlap sack slides, goats and turkeys, tractor rides, and hay mazes.  Then just last night, they had a small lantern festival in the park where you could go ‘pumpkin hunting’ in some hay and all the kids dressed up in costumes to walk around the park with lanterns (we forgot ours.).

Its been lots of fun!  We are finally carving pumpkins today!!  I think Wil will really like sticking his hands in all the seeds.  I’ll get some Halloween and pumpkin carving pictures up at the end of the week!

Phil had a trip out to Yuma so he got to stop by my sisters in Phoenix and meet baby Elise!  Who made her way into the world on September 27th!  I also wanted to throw in a picture of Wil throwing a tantrum and with his morning hair.  Enjoy.

Oh lordy.  My best friend Annakate got married.  It was such an amaaaaaazing weekend.  The wedding was beautiful and everything, down to the paper yellow cocktail straws, screamed nashville, annakate and andrew.  My parents were down for the event, too.  So it was a great family and friends weekend!  Most of my pics came from my mom since I was busy doing my bridesmaid thing. Luckily Phil snapped one picture of me and the bride late night at the honky tonks, haha.  Congrats Annakate and Andrew!!
